The Connection Between COVID-19 & Heart Complications; What Doctors Are Learning About Coronavirus and Why Delaying Care for Heart Attacks is Still Occurring

WHAT:
Cardiovascular physicians and researchers are beginning to gain more insight into the connection between COVID-19 and heart problems.

Doctors say there is growing data that suggests cardiovascular complications may result in about 20 percent of patients who have COVID, and that cardiovascular complications may be contributing to about 40 percent of all coronavirus-related deaths.

Dr. Kirk Knowlton, director of cardiovascular research and associate chief of cardiology at the Intermountain Healthcare Heart Institute, will address the connection between COVID-19 and heart disorders during Intermountain’s Community COVID Update today at 2:30 pm, MT.

Additionally, doctors say fears about the virus are also still preventing too many patients from seeking medical care when they are experiencing acute heart attack symptoms, and that too many people are waiting too long to get emergency care. Many patients are also still not keeping up with appointments that help keep heart disease, diabetes, or other chronic health conditions in check.
